STORY

The endless acrimony between motorists and cyclists has entered its latest chapter with major changes to the Highway Code.

David Brockbanks:

Vehicles giving up priority to pedestrians at junctions is going to lead to more pedestrians getting knocked down at junctions. We actually have dedicated crossing points in the roads to avoid this type of accident. It’s a bad idea.

Steven Middleton:

If a cyclist want to ride on the roads. They should be made to have tax and insurance like us car drivers.

John Monaghan: Get them to pay insurance to ‘drive’ it. Then they can have the same rights. Let the cops fine me for not stopping in the middle of a roundabout to let them out, or let them be brave enough to not stop when faced with a large vehicle. And get rid of the cycle lanes clearly not required anymore.

Lesley Batchelor:

I was also taught that if a person on a bike, scooter, skateboard or anything on wheels goes across a pedestrian crossing they are not classed as a pedestrian as they are using a mode of transport!

Marshall Normington:

The new rule about giving way to pedestrians waiting to cross at a junction a motorist is turning into could lead to more rear in shunts. It means you will have to stop on the road you are intending to leave and hope the driver behind you realises and also stops as he cannot over take you as it is a junction.

Julie Hardman: Then cyclists must abide by the rules of the road, so let's start with insurance!

Jonathon Parker: I think the waiting to cross rule is ridiculous, we have pedestrian crossings for a reason, to give people a safe place to cross, easily recognisable by motorists. My fear is that some motorists may see the pedestrian and allow them to cross whilst someone in the other lane may not resulting in tragedy.

Davey Rodley:

Pedestrians on phones will now feel it’s their right to stupidly continue walking straight onto a road at a junction, no need to take a quick look to see if a car’s coming, they have right of way.

Paul Jenkins: Does that include cyclists that ride through RED lights or jump on the pavement to pass a red light!!
