Project will help rejuvenate Hetton area

- A SUPER’S VIEW by Sarah Pitt Chief Supt, Southern Area Command

Ihad the pleasure of visiting Hetton last week to see first-hand how the newly-launched HALO Project will help rejuvenate the area and support those who live there.

If you’re not already aware, we as a force have teamed up with partners across Wearside, including Sunderland City Council, to launch a problem-solving initiative aimed at breathing fresh life into the community.

The HALO Project – operating from The Hetton

Centre – will see key organisations and services all working together under the same roof to support the community of Hetton and help some of the most vulnerable in the area.

Back in September 2020, we launched something similar in Southwick – and we’re absolutely delighted with the way that the SARA Project has progressed, going from strength to strength there.

That’s what we hope to replicate in Hetton – and last week during half-term, we had our official launch day where dozens of families came along to chat to the HALO team and find out more about what we have planned.

It was an amazing day and so good to hear your views, find out what you want from us, and how we can work together to tackle a range of issues – from crime and disorder, mental health, unemployment rates and improving the aesthetic appearance of the area.

You’ll be hearing a lot more about the HALO Project over the coming weeks and months as we, the council, Tyne & Wear Fire & Rescue Service, Gentoo, All Together Better Sunderland and Together for Children all combine to provide streamlined support to those who need it most.
