Sunderland College bosses are aiming to train Wearside’s workforce of the future by investing in new training facilities for its T Level students.

T Levels are the Government’s new two-year technical study programmes, designed in collaboration with leading employers, to provide the skills that businesses require in the workforce by combining classroom study with industry placements.

With many sector embracing T Levels as a way to bring in innovative ideas and nurture young talent, Sunderland College is investing in new technical facilities to deliver engineering, manufacturing, and energy sector skills, along with training in leadership, managementand business administration.

Ellen Thinnesen, chief executive of Education Partnership

North East – which includes Sunderland College – said: “This investment reflects the work we have been doing to align our 16 to 19 and adult skills strategy to the industrial and digital developments across Sunderland and the wider North East.

"Our T Level qualifications have been designed in collaboration with priority sectors to produce a skilled workforce for the future.

"We look forward to playing a key role in transforming technical education and providing our students with state-of-the-art facilities as they gain the essential skills and knowledge that industry will demand in the future.”

Set to benefit from the new developments is the college’s Department of Engineering, Manufacturing and Automotive.

Once complete, the college’s Sunderland-based engineering, manufacturing and automotive facilities aim to offer some of the best training facilities in the region.

The Department of Education is also supporting the college to launch T Levels in business management.

Industry placements are a core element of T Levels and students spending at least 45 days with many businesses embracing the qualification as a way to nurture and secure young talent.

The work at the college is due for completion this summer.
