Penshaw in no mood to let Ryhope get the best of them

- By Vince Williams nep.sport@jpimedia.co.uk

Penshaw Catholic Club edged a close encounter at Ryhope Foresters 2-1 in the Robson Pattison Cup of the Sunderland and District Over-40s Football League.

Ryhope started the game strongly and were unlucky not to be in front with only a brave close range stop by Penshaw keeper Tony Mustard keeping the scores level.

After a couple of opportunities spurned by Ryhope, Penshaw got their game together and started to test the home defence and from a free-kick.

John Spence delivered a perfect inviting cross, beautifully headed home by Paul Hodgson to put Penshaw ahead. The game was now end-to-end and from a corner Ryhope got the equaliser, although there was a bit of luck about it with a deflection by a Penshaw defender looping the ball over the stranded Mustard.

Just before half-time, Spence had a great chance to regain the lead for Penshaw, but his close-range effort was brilliantly blocked by a defender.

The second half started the same as the first and Penshaw regained the lead from the penalty spot after a Paul Donnelly run ended with him being hauled down in the box when he looked like scoring.

Chris Moody did what he always does from the penalty spot and gave Ryhope keeper Paul Young no chance.

Penshaw withstood late some Ryhope pressure to earn a quarter-final date away at Wallsend.

Hartlepool FC Blues had a Robson Pattison Cup game at home to a physical Middlesbrough side and won 3-1.

Hartlepool Cricket Club booked themselves a place in the semi-final of the Ironside Cup with an excellent 3-1 away win at Durham County.

Washington EMS hosted Blyth Masons Arms in the Robson Pattison Cup and a thrilling match ended with a 3-2 win for Blyth.

The first half ended 0-0 with both sides fighting hard to get the first goal.

Washington started the

second half brighter and went 1-0 up when Carl Short sent striker Paul Kindon through to drive home.

Wallsend came straight back and winger Robbie Eastway cut in from the left to fire a screamer into the top corner.

Washington went 2-1 down when their stand-in keeper failed to pick up a cross and Michael Walton fired into an empty net.

Washington fought back and equalised when Peter Bryson headed home from a great corner.

The game looked like going to penalties until Blyth’s Andy Scott crossed a ball which went into the top corner of the net to secure a 3-2 win.

Seaton Buildings left it late to take their Ironside Cup quarter-final tie with Boldon Old Barrel to penalties, fighting back from 3-1 down.

Seaton had John James, Stu Davison and Dave Graham scoring. With the game going to penalties, Seaton held their nerve to win 5-4 and now face Hartlepool Tech in the semi-final.

Seaton Carew started well with some early pressure on the home side Willow Pond.

AfteraCarewattackbroke down the ball was played out of defence by Pond which was flicked on by Robert Henderson,

that set Lee away one-onone with Carew keeper John O'Neil, but Lee opted for power and blazed his shot over the bar.

Before the half time break, Pond were unable to capitalise on their possession and David Laws was again denied by the impressive O’Neil.

The second half saw Pond striker Lee almost score, but Seaton counter-attacked and Ian Good latched on to the ball, but hit the post with his shot with Tilbury beaten.

Seaton did take the lead when Matthew Thompson cut in from the right and played in Fraser, who scored from close range.

Pond were left reeling after another Seaton counter-attack that had Ian Good

going away from goal inside the box but Brown dived in to get the ball, referee Heskett made no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Paul Lowden stepped up to score the penalty past the diving Tilbury to double Carew’s lead.

Pond played some good attacking football, but lacked the finish to beat the Seaton keeper.

Raymond Dalgleish had a shot saved by O'Neil and from a Lee cross, Dalgleish had a diving header go just wide.

Pond were left to rue their missed opportunities when Seaton Carew scored a third goal to seal their semi-final place, with Dave Cooling slidding the ball home.
