Work to start on £26m Sunderland station revamp as southern entrance is closed.

Jean Wright: About time, so embarrassing not to have a toilet in a train station, it can only be better.

David Humble: Basically you are keeping the underground bit where people spend most of their time and doing up the bit above it which people just walk straight through.

Tom May: It can be argued both need addressing! One fairly recent occasion I got the train from Sunderland and the systems were completely on the blink and there was zero information on train times at all downstairs or upstairs!

Linda Ford: Another waste of money.

Tom McDonald: So when you walk out of this wonderful building once it is built, what do you see other than shuttered up shops, even the pound shop in the Bridges has packed up and left.

Alan Lawton: A big thank to the conservatives for funding this refurbishment but I think it should have been moved to where the civic centre is more space for future growth.

Jason Hill: It would need more than £26million to move it to the old Civic Centre site.

Upcycling Angels: They would have been far better building a brand new one on the site of the civic centre making that a huge transport hub with trains, buses and metros.

Shihab Mahroof: What's the point of spending £26 million with limited train connections. Sunderland doesn't have a direct rail network connection to most of the major cities in the UK.

Jack Carver: It's the worst train station, has been for years, no toilets, escalator constantly off. Let hope it's an improvement.

Mark Jennings: About time. It's a disgrace right now and has been for years.

Wilf Newall: Not before time it’s an absolute disgrace.

Tim Rowley: About time.
