Guilt (StarzPlay, from August 1)

Don’t get confused

– this is not the BBC comedy-drama starring Mark Bonnar. Neither is it an American remake. Instead, it’s an entirely different programme that simply shares the same name. Daisy Head stars as Grace Atwood, a US student living in the UK whose life is turned upside down by the murder of her best friend, Molly Ryan. Grace immediately becomes the prime suspect, and even her own sister, Natalie, isn’t sure whether to believe her when she says she’s innocent – but there’s worse to come when rumours of a British royal and a high-end sex club’s involvement comes to light. Billy Zane, Cristian Solimeno and Anthony Head, Daisy’s real-life father, are among the supporting cast.

La Brea (Paramount+, from August 1)

What would happen if a huge sinkhole appeared in the middle of Los Angeles? That’s the question David Applebaum asked himself when he first dreamed up the idea that would become La Brea. The producer-director-writer has previously worked on such hit shows as NCIS: New Orleans and The Mentalist, but this is his first completely original project. It’s a sci-fi drama in which hundreds of people, vehicles and buildings are sucked into the aforementioned hole, which develops on the site of the famous La Brea Tar Pits. Those who survive the experience find themselves in a strange primeval world, where they must battle to stay alive. The story focuses on one family separated by the strange phenomenon. Natalie Zea and Eoin Macken star.

Luck (Apple TV+, from August 5)

Move over Pixar – this summer’s animated blockbuster promises to be the latest offering from Skydance Media, which has enjoyed previous success with live action films such as True Grit, various entries in the Mission: Impossible franchise and Top Gun: Maverick. Luck is the company’s first animation project and follows the adventures of Sam Greenfield after she accidentally stumbles upon the Luck of Land, a secret place in which magical creatures control and distribute both the good and bad luck in the world. Upon her discovery, she sets about with the creatures’ help to change her own fortunes for the better. Eva Noblezada voices Sam, while Simon Pegg, Whoopi Goldberg and Jane Fonda are among those offering their talents to the proceedings.
