Archbold, Liddle net to give Penshaw a fighting chance

- Vince Williams nep.sport@nationalworld.com

Penshaw Catholic Club boosted their Sunderland and District Over-40s Premier Division survival chances with a fine 2-0 home win against Killingworth YPC.

Yet another defensive reshuffle saw Chris Hamilton and Dave Speding drafted into the side and they didn’t disappoint alongside the excellent Damian Maw and keeper Tony Mustard to thwart many Killingworth attacks.

Mustard in particular gained man of the match award for some great goalkeeping, with some top class saves.

This proved to be a hard working effort from the Penshaw players spurred on by a goal on the half hour mark from captain Archie Archbold.

The second half saw Killingworth press for an equaliser, but found a resolute Penshaw in no mood to allow them the chance.

A resolute Penshaw got their reward 10 minutes from the end with a second goal after a fine cross by Luke Charlesworth was headed in at the far post by Mark Liddle to seal an excellent 2-0 victory.

In the Premier Division, Hartlepool FC Blues beat a stubborn Washington EMS side 2-0.

In Division Two, Hartlepool Cricket Club took a scratch squad on the long trip down to Richmond Town, but put in an excellent performance to win 4-1.

In Division Three Hartlepool Raby Arms travelled to the league leaders Shildon, putting in a gritty performance before going down 2-0.

Houghton Cricket remained unbeaten this season in Division Four after a draw away to Oak Tree Farm.

The Division One game between Dubmire SC and Grindon Broadway should have been all over in the first 30 minutes.

Dubmire were put under intense pressure by Grindon and after five minutes Diamond scored.

A minute later, Griffiths made it 2-0.

In the second half, a misunderstanding between a Grindon defender and goalkeeper allowed Dubmire to pull one goal back.

After an hour, Diamond scored again for Grindon to make it 3-1.

For the last 15 minutes, Dubmire responded, but the Grindon defence kept them at bay.

Plains Farm Project kept their Division Two unbeaten run going with a 6-4 win against Newton Aycliffe Cobblers Hall.

However, Farm found themselves behind, but a Taylor strike got them back on level terms.

Taylor attacked Hall’s defence and was brought down in the box and Anth Armstrong slotted home the resulting penalty.

Farm saw further goals coming from Armstrong, Purvis and a brace from Mullen which sealed the game.

The Cambridge had some early shots on target before going ahead from a deflected shot by Neil Richardson that wrong footed Willow Pond keeper Andy Tilbury.

Although Pond had good possession, no clear cut chances were made and the Cambridge defended well and went into the break with a slim lead.

The second half saw a

cross by Stephen Park hit the underside of the bar and it bobbled over the line as fullback Lee Brown tried his best to clear his lines.

A loss of possession in the middle of the park by the home side, saw Lee Etheridge attack and cross the ball for Neil Middlemiss, who scored from inside the box, giving The Cambridge a three-goal lead.

Pond almost got a goal back from a great passing move, but Simon Snowdon was thwarted by his own player.

Pond then did get on the scoresheet when striker Martin Lee beat the away

defence with pace and fired home past keeper Richard Chambers.

Lee should of got a second, but his run and lob over Chambers went agonising wide.

Cambridge could have stretched their lead in the dying minutes, but the home side defence held firm but fell to a 3-1 home defeat.
