Names in the frame to replace Mowbray amid uncertain future

-

Sunderland head coach Tony Mowbray admitted his future at the club is uncertain following Tuesday’s play-off defeat against Luton Town.

Sunderland are reportedly considering changing their head coach - with several candidates on their radar.

Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray admitted his future at the club is uncertain following Tuesday’s play-off defeat against Luton Town, amid claims Italian coach Francesco Farioli has been lined up for the job

“I’ve enjoyed it, but who knows what my future holds,” said Mowbray after the game at Kenilworth Road.

‘Let’s wait and see. Do I want to be here next season? I do, yes. But let’s wait and see how it goes, and what the summer brings.

“I don’t know what will happen next. I’ll just get on with it. I’ve got a contract so I’ll just keep going. I only mention that off the speculation off recent weeks. Let’s wait and see.

Talksport have since reported Mowbray is fighting to save his job at the Stadium of Light, with Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle, Farioli and New York Red Bulls head coach Gerhard Stuber among the contenders to replace him.

Stuber, who previously managed Barnsley, has sat alongside Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus at a match this season when the pair watched the side’s 2-1 win at Birmingham in November.

Like many clubs, Sunderland do have a succession plan in place for their head coaching role, which helped them appoint Mowbray less than a week after Alex Neil’s abrupt departure.

Mowbray replaced Neil at the Stadium of Light at the end of August before guiding the club into the play-offs despite several injury setbacks.

Meanwhile, non-executive Sunderland director and fan Dave Jones was quick to react to the Black Cats' play-off exit on Tuesday evening.

Taking to social media after the game, Jones said: "Tough night but overall it's been such an enjoyable season watching this talented young team flourish.

"This is just the start of the journey for this team and not the end of the road."
