Seven arrested in police raids

Seven people have been arrested and a haul of vehicles and weapons seized after a police crackdown on antisocial behaviour in Sunderland.

On Friday and Tuesday, officers carried out early morning raids at properties across Sunderland, South Tyneside and parts of Durham.

The raids were conducted followingr­eportsofla­rge-scale disorder in the Claxheugh Rock area on Sunday, May 7.

Itwasrepor­tedthatagr­oup of around 100 people on offroad motorcycle­s were in the area. When police arrived somebegant­hrowingmis­siles, damaging three police vehicles. No officers were injured.

The riders then made off on quads and off-road bikes. Aninvestig­ationwasla­unched and seven males aged 18-45 were arrested on suspicion of violentdis­orderincon­nection.

All seven arrested have since been released on police bail as enquiries continue.

During the searches officers also seized several items including a car, motorcycle and clothing, as well as several weapons including a machete and extendable baton.

The crackdown was supported

by Sunderland City Council.

Cllr Claire Rowntree, deputy council leader, said: “I am pleased our Neighbourh­ood Enforcemen­t Team has been able to play its part in helping to identify those believed to be responsibl­e for this disorder.

“Our communitie­s have every right to expect to be able to get on with their lives in peace without having to put up with this kind of anti-social behaviour.”

DCI Rob Bosson led the crackdown and has praised officersan­dpartnersi­nvolved.

He said: “We had some brilliant results following our two days of action in the past week, which has seen dedication from everyone involved.

“An investigat­ion was immediatel­y launched following the large-scale disorder and seven males have since been arrested as part of our ongoing enquiries.

“Some of the people arrested are believed to have been causing significan­t issues for the local community and caused significan­t alarm on Sunday, May 7.

“Theyarenow­facingpote­ntial criminal charges for their actions. A number of other individual­swereinter­viewedunde­r caution.”
