Easington Lane WMC deny Easington Colliery Welfare cup success

Having won the Geol Consultant­sPeterleea­ndDistrict­Sunday League Premier Division, Easington Colliery Welfare were hoping to add the John &PatMcManus­MemorialCu­p to their haul of trophies.

However, after being in control for most of the tie against Easington Lane WMC, they let a two-goal lead slip from 3-1 to 3-3 after 90 minutes, only for them to lose the penalty shoot out 4-2.

The Lane WMC equalised with the last kick of the 90 minutes, a stunning freekick from Karl Powney to make it 3-3 and to see a penalty shootout.

Tom Bott, Dennis Tapping and Dylan Elliott were all on target for the Welfare, whereas Callum Haswell and a brace from Karl Powney was the Lane reply.

Both clubs however have had a great season, the Welfare

winning the Premier Division title and were runner-up in two domestic cup competitio­ns, the Tommy Burrell Memorial Cup and the John & Pat McManus Memorial Cup.

The Lane WMC won the Premier Division League Cup and the John & Pat McManus Memorial Cup and were runners-up in the Premier Division and the Heart Foundation Area Cup.

*Seaton Buildings are on course for promotion from Division One of the Sunderland and District Over-40s Football League after beating Grindon Broadway 4-3 on Wednesday evening.

They now face Roseberry Hilda Park, Redcar Town and Newcastle East End in their final three home games. So promotion is all in their hands.

Hartlepool FC Blues dented the Premier League title ambitions of Northumber­land side Marden with a 1-0 home win.

In Division Two, Hartlepool Cricket Club travelled through the tunnel to play Walkergate in their final game of the season, and despite having the bare eleven players they came away with a 3-2 win.
