BIG WAVE ODYSSEY

A slice of surfing paradise doesn’t always mean tropical destinations. Some surfers like to charge the big stuff. French surfer Justine Dupont moved to Portugal to be near Europe’s premier big wave spot, Nazaré.

In this new era of big wave riding, commitment and training bring together the technical, physical and mental aspects of surfing. Nazaré is the sort of place that compels you to enhance your level of surfing, so Justine and Fred moved here last winter. After a few intense months, Justine is thriving in the big surf. “There is no other place like this. It’s big really often. Challenging. It’s the best place in my opinion to train and ride big waves.”

Nazaré has changed Justine’s life, become her base camp and propelled her onto the global big wave scene. Justine just took part in the historic Women’s Pe’ahi Challenge which saw six competitors charge monstrous set waves at the infamous big wave spot on Maui.

Justine and her boyfriend Fred David have fallen in love with Nazaré.
