MY SURF HOUSE

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS. AND WHO WOULDN’T LOVE THAT HOME TO BE A GORGEOUS BEACH HOUSE BY THE OCEAN? FOR SOME OF US IT’S JUST A PIPE DREAM, BUT WITH A LITTLE EFFORT WE CAN ALL GIVE OUR HOMES A BEACH-STYLE MAKEOVER. WE ASKED THREE SURFERS HOW THEY STYLED

Thr surfers style their homes to suit their beach lifestyle.

Hayley Shaw McGui’e Australian surfer and all round awesome woman Hayley Shaw McGuinness lives on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with her husband Josh Moody, her dog, a flatmate, and soon, a brand new baby boy.

Everything in our home has a story. The only ‘new’ thing is our new sofa, as the one I did have was 40 years-old and the leather had well and truly been loved to death. Lots of the beautiful second-hand cane furniture came from local council roadside pick-ups, and some other great finds include an awesome round table that I just had to get some new glass cut for, and a comfy chair that has hand tie-dyed pillows from India to replace the horrible ones that I found with it.

We have a cool coffee table handmade by a friend, that houses seashells that I have collected from all over the world. And we have lots and lots of plants – some hanging and some outdoors – and I love all of them and chat to them regularly. One of my fave hanging ones is in a macramé pot that my Nanna found in her garage, from when my mum was a little girl. We have a handmade wooden surfboard with love notes from everyone who came to our wedding. Everything in our little home means something special to us. We try not to buy new stuff, but to be resourceful in finding second-hand things that serve a purpose and also fit into the aesthetic of our home.
