WHY SURFING IS GOOD EXERCISE
How surfing will give you
a better focus
Surfing is so much more than good exercise: It’s like playing your favourite song on repeat and never getting sick of it. An endorphin cocktail on tap. A blank canvas to express your craziest or most graceful artwork. A place to connect not only with yourself, away from technology and the happenings of life, but also to connect with others who share the same love as you do. Simply put, surfing is magic. And here is why:
1. You are one with nature
I don't think you could feel more 'at one with nature' than actually riding nature.
2. You feel at home
On average, the adult body is made up of 60% water, so it's no wonder that we feel so 'at home' and at peace in the sea, surrounded by this huge body of water.
3. Full body workout
Surfing incorporates all the major muscle groups and then some. It requires an incredibly high amount of energy, so not only will you be giving your body a workout of a lifetime while burning a tonne of calories, you won't even realise it because it is so much fun!
4. Mental health booster
Even before studies and science caught onto the incredible mental health benefits gained from surfing, I think it's safe to say that anyone who has ever picked up a surfboard and ridden even just one wave will tell you that surfing is not just a physical workout.
The mental health and stress relieving benefits are astounding.
5. Healthy and adventurous lifestyle
While fitness itself is a lifestyle, surfing brings a completely different lifestyle element to the table. Surfing is a sport that can never be perfected, and I think this has to be one of the most powerful and exciting elements of looking at surfing as an exercise. Some of my best memories are when I was learning to surf, feeling out of my comfort zone in an incredibly powerful element of nature, and learning how to adapt, overcome my fears and keep coming back day after day, year after year. Surfing brings people from all over the world together to share the same journey. It’s so much more than exercise and an incredible way to strengthen our bodies, our heart health and our mental wellbeing. It is an opportunity to exercise our boundaries as humans, to travel the world to ride waves, learn about new cultures and encounter people we would otherwise maybe never meet.
So yes, I may be biased, but surfing is the best exercise in the world. See you in the water!
