Regular exercise, yoga and Tai Chi – the secret of amazing Phyllis, 100
IF you want to know the secret of a long and healthy life, look no further than Phyllis Smith, who loves her yoga, Tai Chi and getting regular exercise.
Phyllis has reached her century in style, despite being injured in a road accident this year.
She recovered well and was on top form as she celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family.
Born in Staines during the First World War, Phyllis celebrated her special day at the home in Charvil, Berkshire, where she lives with her sister, who is 95 next week.
Phyllis enjoyed some cake and opening her presents on her big day. She was particularly excited to receive a card of congratulations from the Queen, a message that was read out to everyone in attendance.
She was also pleased to welcome a surprise visitor in the form of her lawyer Julie Taberer, who travelled to Charvil to present Phyllis with a bouquet and a card.
Phyllis first met Julie, who works at Richmond-based law firm Moore Blatch, this year after the accident.
Julie supported Phyllis in her recovery and the pair developed a strong friendship.
Phyllis was able to make a speedy recovery, aided by her active lifestyle, despite her advanced age. She exercises regularly, having practised yoga for 40 years and has recently taken up Tai Chi. Phyllis never lost the vim and vigour of her youth, and she is already looking forward to celebrating her next landmark birthday.
Phyllis said: “The whole day was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.
“I was so pleased to be able to celebrate with so many special people, including Julie’s unexpected but very much appreciated appearance. I wish I could turn 100 more often.”
Julie, senior solicitor at Moore Blatch, called Phyllis remarkable, adding: “I was pleased to be able to celebrate her special day with her.”
