New plan ‘by December’
GUILDFORD and Elmbridge borough councils would both see large increases in the amount of homes they would need to build each year under the new proposals.
Although as Councillor Paul Spooner, the leader of Guildford Borough Council, points out, if authorities submit their local plans before March 31 2018 the current assessment would apply.
He said: “However, any future review of our local plan would then have to use the new methodology for calculating housing need.
“To enable people to thrive, wherever they live or work in our borough, we must submit our new local plan as soon as possible.
“We aim to do this in December this year, following our latest public consultation about updates to the plan.”
Elmbridge Borough Council delayed its local plan process while it awaited information on the proposed new housing needs formula.
A spokesman said: “At the moment we are assessing the government’s consultation proposals, the methodology and the implications for Elmbridge.
“We will update our residents on the next steps for the local plan as soon as we can.”
