Hindhead crossroads, was formerly a wellknown congestion spot, where the A3 between Portsmouth and London was crossed by the A287 between Hook and Haslemere. The A3 now passes underneath this beauty spot, in the Hindhead Tunnel. The old route along the Punch Bowl has been covered with soil extracted from the tunnel and relandscaped.
8At a seat beneath trees, leave the main track to bear left uphill. It is signposted for Gibbert Hill. Cross an open space where five ways meet. Enjoy the view from the triangulation point on your right and the Celtic Cross to your left. From this viewpoint turn right down a small path for 100 yards to enjoy a beautifullycarved bench created by Sir Walter Bailey, as part of the Surrey Hills Inspiring Views project. Return to Gibbert Hill viewpoint.
