BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE BOARD GAME

Set in the BSG universe, players are in search of the secret cylon (bad sneaky robots at war with humanity for the uninitiated) amongst their ranks. The secret cylon is there to cause mischief, political uncertainty, and have the other players turn against one another – which sounds tricky, but it made all the easier by the sheer depth of mistrust this game generates around the table. The humans attempt to make their way home, keeping the fleet running on an even keel. To make things even more fraught, a later round of loyalty cards are dished out once you’re deep into this two to three hour game, meaning there could always be a bit of a twist at the end. For those of you dreaming of hanging out in person with your gaming for several hours, this might be the game to celebrate that with.

STAR WARS: REBELLION

Take control of the Rebel Alliance or the totality of the imperial power of the Galactic Empire in this epic board game of titanic struggle with enough minis to keep the most kleptomaniacal wargamers happy. This is another game of cat and mouse as the rebels try and defend their secret base while the empire attempts find it and, most likely, aim the Death Star at it. Combat, or conflict more generally, see players rolling dice off against one another, using the leaders they have in that location. Like any game of shuffling dudes on a board, there’s interesting choices for the empire about which systems to abandon and which to continue to oppress and control – before you become stretched too thin. The rebels on the other hand need to spend their time winning the hearts and minds of the galaxy. An ideally meaty game best played at two player counts

SPACE HULK:

DEATH ANGEL – THE CARD GAME

Maybe a surprise entry for this list, but the theme of ‘cool space stuff’ that is strong in all of Konieczka’s work isn’t unexpected. Playing with the classic (and often cited as formative) Space Hulk setting, this card game sets players up with the unenviable task of genestealer clean up. Grab a couple of space marines from the Warhammer 40,000 universe and head into wave upon wave of teeth, claws and acidic blood. In part tower defence, the game offers a cooperative sense of impending doom for players as they’re required to thin out the genestealer menace enough to be able to roll higher than the remaining number. Because each player is secretly choosing their action, getting the ‘vibe’ of this particular clean up crew is as important as a good roll.
