Can you tell us a little bit about how The Dice Box first got started?

Steph (myself) and my partner Trev have always enjoyed playing board games. We found that whenever we told our friends about a new game, they were always so interested in playing too, and we soon realised how much we loved introducing new games to people. We had toyed with the idea of opening a Board Game Cafe for a while so when the opportunity presented itself, we took a giant – and very scary – leap of faith and went for it, opening in November 2018.

What’s it like being a Board Game Cafe in your area?

Our local area is fantastic. Our customers are amazing. It has a real community feel and really in a short time (we have been closed for a long time due to Covid19) we seem to have a created a real community feel at our café, where we seem to have lots of people very interested in our games.

What do you think makes your Cafe unique?

We work very hard to introduce new games to people. Our library is always changing and we like it that way – so do our customers.

What titles have you found most popular recently, and which are your own favourites?

When we were last open which was October 2020, we found games such as Ticket to Ride being very popular. Light family games. Sagrada is extremely popular along with Azul, all the Azuls! My (Steph’s) favourite title of all time is still Above and Below – there is just something magical about that game. Trevor’s favourite title is a toss up between Terra Mystica and A Feast for Odin – he can’t decide and asking him to decide made him pull very funny faces.

Have you any favourite memories associated that you’d want to share?

None in particular, because we have lots.

At the moment, the memory of the cafe itself is wonderful and we very much can’t wait to get back to our lovely customers and our wall of games, plus our incredible cakes and coffees.

What events do you run for the local gaming scene?

We have quite a few events such as an RPG night and social gaming, however we shall have to wait for these to be allowed to run again before we can get back to these.

What’s been your favourite part of running a Board Game Café?

Meeting so many different people from all walks of life. We really love to get to know our customers and enjoy chatting with them and having so much fun.

How has it been through COVID-19, and what are your plans for when lockdown is lifted?

We are closed but thankfully we have an online shop so that’s really been great for us. We are so thankful for our customers support in choosing to purchase through us, they have no idea how much it has helped us really. We are just itching to get back to it now. We just want to get back to what we love and continue to offer board gaming to anyone and everyone that comes into the cafe.
