Take a Break Fate & Fortune

Loved by PHANTOMS!

Reading my favourite mag on holiday brought the dead to my door!

- By Evelyn King, 57

Unpacking my suitcase, I pulled out all my holiday clothes and bits and pieces. ‘I forgot this was here!’ I smiled, settling on the bed to read

Fate & Fortune.

I always treated myself to a copy of the Summer special to read on holiday and this short break, at a B&B in Largs, North Ayrshire, was no different.

My mum, Elizabeth, and I were regulars here and loved it. Set in a beautiful Victorian building overlooking the sea, we always booked the large family room on the top floor, which had a big four poster for me and a comfy, smaller bed next to the big bay window for Mum.

It was a beautiful night, and the full Moon was casting a bright silver line of light on the sea – perfect for reading spooky stories!

Not that Mum and I believed in ghosts. Suddenly, out the corner of my eye, I saw Mum who was lying on her bed reach out her hand to grasp the air. ‘Evelyn...?’ she said.

‘I’m here, Mum,’ I soothed, thinking she was dreaming. ‘I’m in bed reading.’

But when I looked over, Mum was wide awake. She looked baffled… and very scared!

‘I just saw a young woman in a long white nightdress pass by my bed!’ she gasped. ‘I-I thought it was you… until I realised the woman had long dark hair and no legs or feet. She was floating and then went right through the wardrobe!’ ‘You must have seen a ghost!’ I gasped. Mum was quite shaken and didn’t really want to believe it.

‘I must have been dreaming,’ she kept saying to me.

But I knew for certain she had been wide awake.

The following morning, at breakfast, the B&B owner noticed how distracted we looked and asked if everything was OK.

‘Something weird happened last night,’ I said, reluctantly, worried she might be scared too. I told her the story.

‘Sounds like you saw the school teacher who used to live here,’ she chuckled to our surprise.

What’s more, the owner revealed she had remodelled the house, removing the original door which had been where the ghost exited.

We returned many times to the B&B, but never saw the ghost again. The spirit only appeared to us on that one night out of all the dozens of times we’ve been there. Was it because she saw me reading Fate & Fortune and realised we’d be interested in seeing her and would be open to believing what we saw?

Or did the full Moon have a mystical effect on us that switched on Mum’s psychic senses just long enough for us to see the ghost?

Either way it still gives us the shivers thinking about it. Since then, I’ve captured a few spirits on camera near the B&B, including a monk at an old abbey, which I might never have noticed were it not for this experience. We’re certainly no longer disbelievers!
