Silent witness

As penniless students we hadn’t questioned why the rent was so cheap. The Ouija board had been revealed one night, under layers of old wallpaper. Using a glass, we’d joked around, trying to contact Spirit... and sheer evil had enveloped our home. We’d fled, gone our separate ways, but it followed us, I know that now. I attended four funerals in a year, the deaths all unexplaine­d. Each September new students move into the house. I try to warn them, but they can’t see or hear me.

‘Smile!’ instructed Julie as the group posed, facing the park entrance. With her back to the gate, she was unaware of the speeding car that had mounted the pavement and was heading straight for her, though she saw the expression­s of horror flash onto the faces in front of her... She felt a shove as two firm hands struck from the side, pushing her to safety. Turning to thank her saviour she saw the familiar figure of her husband, whose ashes they’d come to scatter...
