Take a Break Fate & Fortune

A lesson from Spirit

I loved my job as a teacher, but after hours I was living in fear. By Debbie Ison, 33

We sang one last song for the day before the children put on their coats and I waved them off home. I was a primary school teacher and loved my job. What I dreaded was going home…

I had a wonderful husband, Peter, now 44, and two lovely children, Rosie and Charlie. But at night, life took a different, very spooky turn.

It had all begun when Charlie was eight months old and we moved him into his own bedroom. Instantly he stopped sleeping and would cry all night, banging his cot bars and trying to escape. The minute he came back into our room, he’d be right as rain.

I began feeling unsettled in our home too. Whenever I fell asleep, I’d notice what looked like a toddler standing in our bedroom doorway staring at us.

Scared of sounding silly, I said nothing to Peter for two years until one day he asked, ‘Do you ever feel like you’re being watched?’ I gulped and nodded.

‘I feel like there’s something by the bedroom door,’ he said. ‘Yes, a child!’ I blurted.

From then on, the strange things escalated. One night, we woke to hear Charlie screaming and banging on his cot.

Eventually, desperate for sleep, we brought him in to our room to try and calm him down.

But the next morning, all the pictures had been flung off the walls in his bedroom.

‘We have to do something,’ I croaked.

But what? I’d always felt spirit. When I was 13 I used to find a male spirit sitting on my bed at night. I’d try pulling the covers, thinking I was dreaming, but the heavy feeling of someone on my bed always remained. Then the figure would stand over me and I’d run screaming from the room. When I’d told Mum, she’d asked my grandparents for some Rosary beads doused in holy water. It worked for a while but the spirit came back.

It was only when I moved out aged 18 to study teaching that the hauntings stopped. So why were they back, and in a different house?

For weeks the haunting nights continued – banging, our son screaming, weird noises from his room. I barely slept. Then in March 2013, 18 months since it had all started, I invited my reflexologist Linda round to do some healing on me. I’d suffered from endometriosis for years and it was the only thing that seemed to help.

As she worked on my feet, she stopped suddenly.

‘There’s a negative energy in this property,’ she said.

‘Tell me about it!’ I scoffed. ‘We have a ghost in Charlie’s room.’

I explained all about the banging in his room and the spooky toddler we’d felt and seen by our door.

Linda nodded, before going up to have a look.

‘There’s a presence stuck in Charlie’s room that is angry and upset,’ she said.

Linda said she knew how to help spirits move on and promised to work on it remotely. ‘It will take time,’ she warned. ‘It’s an infant who has passed and feels forgotten.’

I shivered. That explained the small figure I had seen by the door, and why it only haunted Charlie’s bedroom. Linda’s work paid off and, within weeks, the banging stopped.

I fell pregnant again and life got better.

Then one day, half-way through my pregnancy, I was at work when I felt unwell. I became more and more ill and was signed off work.

At home, I had time to think about my life and realised I didn’t want to return to teaching. I wanted to do something useful to help and heal people.

So I contacted Linda who suggested going with her to some psychic meetings.

There, I met psychic healers and signed up for a Reiki course. I even retrained as a hypnotherapist. I loved the energy and sense of healing people.

By the time our daughter, Mabel, arrived, I knew I had to stop teaching. I loved my pupils but felt I was wasting my psychic ability. So I resigned and have never looked back.

Now my children are 10, nine and six and I run my own hypnotherapy and Reiki healing service. I do mainstream healing, but also more alternative things such as past life regression and ridding people of negative energies and spirits. I help people from all walks of life and am always coming across people who, like me back then, have spirits in their home or attached to them and don’t know what to do. What I went through is good in a way because I can sympathise with what’s happening to them.

As for me, we’ve never had a single bad spirit enter our home since that time nine years ago. But to be on the safe side I cleanse our house regularly, imagining bright white light cleaning it all out.

I love my job so much and, thinking back to the hauntings I’ve experienced, I’m no longer afraid. After all, they brought me to my dream job.
