Ghost Walk

into her personal space. This is my boyfriend, so you take your hands off him and keep them off.'

I poked the receptionist in the chest as I spoke.

I only used one finger, but you' d have thought I' d hit her with a sledgehammer, the way she shrieked.

At least I wasn' t invisible any more.

He said you two were breaking up that you' re not together any more,' she yelled.

Judging by the silence, the ghost walkers were fascinated.

Here was real human drama much more exciting than an unlikely ghost appearance.

I turned to Tom. His face said it all. He' d been lining up his next conquest even before we had separated.

You pig!' I screamed and hit him with a left hook that would have made a boxer proud.

Hardly registering the pain in my hand, I watched with satisfaction as Tom staggered away, his balance destroyed.

The sound of his body rebounding from the front of the passing car was reminiscent of an apple hitting the ground at speed.

Then there was screaming. I didn' t know whose it was possibly my own.

The world spun around me and everything drifted away.

Later at the hospital, I was treated for shock and a broken finger. The police were satisfied that Tom' s death had been an accident.

There were enough witnesses to swear that I' d only hit him not pushed him in front of the car and that he had deserved it.

He hadn' t deserved to die though.

I couldn' t stop shaking and crying.

The doctors put me in a private room for the night and gave me an injection to calm me down.

The last person I expected to visit me was the tour guide.

He sat by my bed patting my hand while I sobbed.

Don' t cry,' he said.

I want Tom,' I whimpered. As I looked at the tour guide through my tears, I realised he was grinning.

Don' t worry about Tom,' he said. I heard you two talking on the coach. This' ll make a great story for the walk.'

He settled himself more deeply into his chair and then held my hand more tightly.

I' ll just stay with you for a while. I' m sure Tom will be along in a minute, my dear. He' ll be along.'

T here were enough witnesses to swear that IÕd only hit him not pushed him in front of the car
