A MAN has been arrested after an alleged assault outside a Middlesbrough nightclub.

The alleged incident, which took place outside The Middlesbrough Empire on Saturday evening, was filmed by clubbers queuing to get inside the popular Corporation Road drinking spot.

The video appears to show a man being picked up and “dropped on his head” next to a kerb.

Cleveland Police confirmed they were called to reports of an assault outside the venue around 11.20pm, but that the victim – who was described as a man in his early 20s wearing dark clothing – had already left the scene.

It has now confirmed that a man, aged 39, has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in police custody.

Onlookers filmed the incident taking place, asking people to “share the hell” out of the video.

People branded the footage as “absolutely disgusting” and said they hoped the police had been contacted at the time.

It is not currently known whether the victim of the incident suffered any injuries. The force has since issued an appeal asking the man to get in touch so they can check on his welfare.

A spokesperson said: “Police are appealing to trace a man following a report of an assault in Middlesbrough on Saturday night (March 23).

“Officers received a report of an assault outside The Empire on Corporation Road around 11:20pm.

“Upon police arrival, the male victim had left the scene and enquiries have not yet led to him being traced.

“He is described as being aged in his early twenties, wearing dark clothing and possibly a white hooded top.

“Officers would like to speak to this man in connection with the incident and to check on his welfare.”

Anyone who may know the identity of the man or anyone who may have further information, is asked to contact the force on 101, quoting reference number 53211.
