Who can be a school nurse?
School nurses have postgraduate qualifications, mainly at master’s level, and are community based. Many will be the named school nurse for a dozen schools. They lead a skill-mixed team of staff nurses, nursery nurses, support workers and administrative staff.
Some schools employ their own “school nurse” but many are not qualified nurses. Increasingly, schools are buying in additional services from their school nursing services. Independent schools employ their own healthcare staff, most of whom are not qualified school nurses. However, many are qualified nurses.
