John be­gan play­ing foot­ball for Wat­ford at 17, in 1981. He started play­ing for Eng­land in 1983 and four years later joined Liver­pool. His last ap­pear­ance for Eng­land was in 1995 and by then he had been capped 79 times – then a record for a black player. John spent two years play­ing for New­cas­tle, be­fore end­ing his ca­reer at Charl­ton Ath­letic in 1999. He then be­came a coach for sev­eral foot­ball teams, in­clud­ing Celtic, and is now a TV pun­dit, sports pre­sen­ter and char­ity am­bas­sador.
