Not for Fritz Sauer the ideologies of National Socialism, his heroes were sportsmen, film makers and musicians, but like all soldiers thrown into the cauldron of the Eastern Front, he had to kill or be killed. It’s not a long book, but it contains gripping details, especially as the war turned into a disaster for the Germans. A good read.
