THE RED MARINE

-

A marine sporting three good conduct stripes and in full marching order poses for the artist. Three of his mates, one of them hatless, stand chatting and an officer looks out from the hillside at a Victorian warship. The artwork for Brandon Thomas’s The Red Marine music sheet was supplied by Frank Dadd and had originally appeared in The Graphic. Published by J Bath of 23 Berners Street, London, there is a dedication at the top of the sheet to the wife of a Major-General Munro thanking her for the hospitality shown by the Royal Marines to the Artists Rifle Volunteers during a recent visit to Walmer.

Frank Dadd was born in London on 28 March 1851 and studied painting at the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy. As well as illustrating several books, he worked regularly for the Illustrated London News and The Graphic. He died in 1929.
