SOLDIERS IN THE PARK
As a sheet music cover illustration for the Soldiers in the Park March by Lionel Monckton, publisher Chappell & Co of 50 New Bond Street chose an image of the drums and fifes of the Grenadier Guards entertaining a London crowd as they leave Wellington Barracks for public duty at nearby Buckingham Palace. The music was copyrighted in 1898, the artwork by Lovig Edwards and the printing by the HG Banks Litho Company. London born Lionel John Alexander Monckton (1861-1924) was the founder of the Oxford University Dramatic Society and having given up practicing law at Lincoln’s Inn went on to become Britain’s most popular composer of Edwardian musical comedy.
