Rifle Volunteers Corps was formed as one company at Gloucester Dock with the following officers: Captain William Vernon Guise, Lieutenant John Jones and Ensign Theodore Aylmer Preston. All three held commission­s dated 21 October 1859. Also with headquarte­rs at Gloucester Dock and of one company was the 3rd Corps with Captain Thomas De Winton, Lieutenant Henry Dowling and Ensign Richard T Smith.
