JOLLY SONGS LANCERS

-

Charles Godfrey (18661935) was a bandmaster with the Royal Horse Guards, and he is credited as the arranger, in 1883, for Jolly Songs Lancers published by Howard & Co of 25 Great Marlborough Street, London. The sheet music cover chosen shows a mounted officer of what appears to be the 12th Lancers. Certainly, the red plastron and plume suggest this, and also, of course, the ‘12’ over ‘L’ below the crossed lances on the shabraque. But there seems to be a suggestion of a

17th Lancers-type skull and crossbones device too. HC Maguire was responsible for the artwork, CB Court of 46 Poland Street, London, the litho work.
