THE PIONEER’S QUICK STEP
Composed and arranged for the piano by James Monroe Deems, the cover of The Pioneer’s Quick Step shows against a rural landscape with an encampment, a pioneer holding an axe and wearing a dark blue uniform with red collar and piping. His shako has two red bands, a tall, red-tipped dark plume, and eagle badge. Artist Lewis Towson Voigt has shown the jacket slightly open to revealing a white waistcoat with many buttons. The caption below the image tells how composer James Deems had dedicated his work to his friend, James W Heron. The publisher was Samuel Carusi of Baltimore, the litho work and printing by Edward Weber & Co, also of Baltimore. A first page heading to the music, which is in Bb major and
2/4 time, tells how the work had been performed by the Independent Blues Band. The Anne SK Brown Military Collection notes that the subject featured is of the Baltimore Pioneers.
