SONGS IN LA FIGLIA DEL REGGIMENTO
La Fille du Regiment (The Daughter of the Regiment) was a comic opera in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti first performed by the Paris Opéra Comique at the Salle de la Bourse on 11 February 1840. In this sheet music version published by C Holt Jr of 156 Fulton Street, New York, we see with several French infantrymen and a drummer to keep her company, opera star Jenny Lind in the costume of a French cantinière. She holds her cap, with its red-white-and-blue rosette and red ribbon, in her left hand. The sheet was printed by Lewis & Brown of New York.
Born on 6 October 1820 in Sweden, Johanna Marie ‘Jenny’ Lind became known as the Swedish Nightingale. She was one of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, performing all around the world including more than 90 concerts in the United States at the invitation of Phineas Taylor Barman, the American showman, politician and businessman. Having settled in London, she was for a number of years a professor of singing at the Royal College of Music.
