The Armourer

THE DRYLAND SAILOR

-

You may remember him from his great hit, The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, or for the ever-popular song, Champagne Charlie. George Leybourne was star of the British Victorian music hall who, if the music sheet cover illustrated is to be believed, had the greatest success with The Dryland Sailor, published by Hopwood & Crew of 42 New Bond Street, London in 1860. A sad tale indeed, the poor shipwrecked sailor, an arm and eye lost at sea, holding out his cap for some spare change. If his mournful face and obvious injuries do not move the passer by, then perhaps the very cause of his plight depicted on canvas might. Alfred Concanen the artist, Stannard & Dixon the printer.
