This is volume 1 of a two part look at the Vietnam War and covers the years 1945 through to 1965. It was a war long time in coming, as first local discontent with French colonial rule erupted into conflict, before the world superpowers got involved, more on which in the second volume. Here though, there’s the immediate wrangling between French, American and Vietnam administrations and an awful lot of politics. The plus side is that you really get the full story behind the headlines and a complex situation, the downside is that it’s a bit of a slog at times.
