Greece Against Rome
PHILIP MATYSZAK
The thing about empires is that they all have to start somewhere. In the case of the Romans, they were just another bunch of barbarian trouble makers to the west of the more populous and powerful Greek city states. This then is the story of how the infighting amongst the Greeks, blinded them to the threat from Rome, until the Romans were at the door, kicking it in. The battles are handled with aplomb but there’s also plenty of social and scientific detail in a lively and entertaining narrative. A colour plate section rounds it off nicely.
