I may be able to help Richard Smith with his question about his WM Heptinstall marked antique rifle. According to Geoffrey Boothroyd's Directory of British Gunmakers, William Heptinstall traded from

1830 to 1856. His son Thomas Allen Heptinstall was turned over to his father following an apprenticeship with George Rutherford in 1848 and the business traded as William Heptinstall & Son from 18 Swan Street, London between 1856 and 1866. Hope that helps.
