Churchill: Master and Commander
ANTHONY TUCKER-JONES
Here you have the experiences the formed the character of Winston, how he perpetually sought out military glory and how his failures and successes gave him the resolve for the tests of WWII. Tucker-Jones quite astutely points out that once in that role he acted more like a warlord than a PM. Blaming Churchill for reversals in Crete, Greece and the initial setbacks in North Africa is largely unwarranted but there is a wealth of detail on his adventures, challenges and ultimately triumphant resolve. ■
