NEXT MONTH: FEBRUARY 2022 ISSUE

We're going right back to the early days of WWII with some nautical action next month and the Battle of the River Plate. Fought on 13 December 1939, this was the first naval battle of WWII between the Kriegsmarine and the Royal Navy. The heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee took on a squadron of Royal Navy ships including the cruisers HMS Ajax, HMS Achilles and HMS Exeter. The Graff Spee was in the South Atlantic on a raiding mission and the British squadron was sent to find her. The result was the battle in the estuary of the River Plate, near the Argentine and Uruguay coastlines.

Also next month we're looking at the armies of Athens and Sparta; revealing what happened in the siege of Fort York in 1812, and the weapons that were used; the webbing series turns to the Dutch with the M78 set; we have Chinese Kalashnikovs; the Fetterman Massacre and Soviet women soldiers.
