Of all the stories about the end of the Third Reich, none is more compelling than the fate of the German 9th Army and thousands of refugees trapped in the Spreewald pocket southeast of Berlin. As the Soviet vice clamped around Berlin, the 9th found itself cut adrift and forced into a headlong retreat through the forests and the village of Halbe.

It became less about General Busse and his men relieving

Berlin and more about trying to stay alive long enough to escape the Soviets and surrender to the Americans. The slaughter and horror were incredible.
