The fate of Legio IX Hispana has fascinated scholars for hundreds of years and latterly, with Rosemary Sutcliffe’s novel, The Eagle of the Ninth, and the subsequent films Centurion and The Eagle. Wiped out in the far north of Britain, destroyed in a London uprising, lost somewhere near the Rhine/ Danube or disbanded near Nijmegen? All four theories are examined, in somewhat pompous style, and rated as to likelihood. While there is no conclusive evidence, the author does, finally, point the finger northwards to Caledonia.
