Medals and militaria at DNW

The March auction at DNW was full of interestin­g lots, particular­ly for medal collectors. Let’s start with some from the collection of the late Roy Painter, firstly with three from Captain JFC Boyle, 38th Foot, who carried the colours at the battle of Alma in the Crimean War. There was the Crimea 1854-56 medal with three clasps for ‘Alma’, ‘Balaklava’ and ‘Sebastopol’; an Indian Mutiny 1857-59 medal with one clasp for ‘Lucknow’; and a Turkish Crimea 1855 medal, Sardinian issue.The three medals sold for £6,440 (includes Buyer’s Premium and VAT of 28.8%).

Next, a pair of medals to Captain HJ Johnson who fought in both India and Zululand, including the final engagement at Ulundi. Johnson served with the 80th Foot. The medals were the India General

Service 1854-95, one clasp for ‘Perak’; and the South Africa 187779 medal, with one clasp, ‘1878-9’. The pair sold for way above estimate at £14,168.

Moving on we have John Paul Minchin of the 38th Foot and the Military General Service 1793-1814 medal with four clasps. These were for ‘Roleia’, ‘Vimiera’, ‘Corunna’ and ‘Salamanca’. This one medal sold for £6,440.

A nice collection next, complete with a photo as well. It’s a Second Afghan War C.B. group of three awarded to Major-General JHP Malcolmson, Sind Horse, late Bombay Horse Artillery. He commanded the Sind Horse at the battle of Maiwand and was twice during the War, firstly at Khushk-i-Nakhud (slightly) and secondly at Deh Khoja outside Kandahar (severely). The grouping included The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, C.B. (Military) Companion’s breast badge; an Indian Mutiny 1857-59 medal with one clasp, ‘Central India’; and an Afghanista­n 1878-80 medal, no clasp. They went for £10,304.

Let’s finish with some D-Day heroics, this of Major JLG Littlejohn­s of the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment for his action at Le Hammel on Gold Beach.

The lot included a Military Cross; a General Service 1918-62 medal with one clasp for ‘Palestine’; the 1939-45 Star; an Africa Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45. The lot sold for £6,182.40.
