Guides raise cash for First Responders

- Mairi Duff

During this session, the Kilmory Brownies and Guides decided as part of Girl led Guiding to raise some monies for the First Responders. The reason for this is that they are very mindful that it takes time for an ambulance to come from Lamlash to this side of the island, and that could be too much time.

The girls had plenty of ideas – too many at one point – and trying to find a suitable time for some of the ideas proved a challenge. In the end the girls decided to hold a sponsored silence, the challenge being that they could not talk for an hour! A challenge indeed when at meetings they are always talking and running about.

So one night before Easter the girls got down to the job – books to read, pens and paper to draw on and, for the leaders, one hour of total silence. Imagine.

Due to the success of the girls being totally silent for the allotted time they were able to raise £285 for the Responders. The girls returned after the Easter holidays and had invited Eveline Thomson and Fiona Laing along to present the money to them. In turn, they brought along a practice defibrillator machine and a Resuscie Anne model to practice some basic life saving techniques.

This was a great evening with all the girls having a go at the defib, lifting Eveline’s very heavy pack and trying on her jacket. The evening was rounded off with the girls presenting the cheques to First Responders with £95 going to each group. The girls gave their thanks to Eveline and Fiona for coming along and showing them a little of what they do.
