Speeding vehicles
Sir,
I would be most obliged to utilise this forum to promote speed awareness on the island, in particular on country roads, a number of which do not have noticeable (if at all) speed restrictions/recommendations.
I am a part-time resident in Clauchlands (Shore) Road, Lamlash. Predominantly a residential area, there are numerous holiday rental properties, frequently occupied by families with young children and/or animals, local residents likewise.
The speed at which vehicles, particularly commercial and farming vehicles, use this road is alarming. It is a popular walkway for pedestrians, often with children and/or pets.
I also experienced a near miss on Tennis Court Road recently when a lorry came along at ridiculously high speed. A colleague of the driver apologised, the driver seemingly unaware that he nearly flattened my dog!
I don’t profess to know the exact statistics, but believe that in the case of an adult, when the impact is at 30mph there is a good chance of survival. At 35mph this reduces by half. At over 35mph, in the majority of cases, it results in fatality. Clearly dramatically different in the case of a child or much loved family pet.
If nothing else, I hope this article makes people stop and think for a moment.
Yours,
