Doctor, Doctor

Dr Malcolm Kerr, who has been a single handed practitioner since coming to Arran 13 years ago, is to get help in the form of a new partner Dr Liz Guthrie.

Dr Guthrie, has been doing locum work for all the doctors on the island for several years and is already known to many patients, but this is a more permanent arrangement.

Dr Guthrie, who is also Mrs Liz Kerr, is no relation to Dr Kerr but is married to Alaister Kerr of Shiskine. It is convenient she should practise under her maiden name to avoid confusion, although she has used it since she graduated from Aberdeen University.

Another doctor will add a new dimension to the practice and Dr Guthrie, who specialises in homeopathy and acupuncture, will be practicing at Brodick Medical Centre.

Rickshaw ride

Looking for a lift to Brodick Castle? Well now you can get there by rickshaw. In an enterprising move, Richard Lane and Jane Barker start their new transport service this weekend.

Between them they have formed the Isle of Arran Rickshaw Company and have bought a splendid new rick- shaw from Oxford which will convey passengers between the ferry terminal and the pedestrian entrance to the castle.

Not surprisingly ex-nurse Richard and country park ranger Jane got the idea in India. It was while visiting the country two years ago they thought it might be a good idea for Arran. They have deliberately chosen their first route because there are no hills!

Service surprise

Some local television viewers watching Hamish McBeth last Sunday were surprised when one character took his transistor radio into the hills to listen to a church service and when he switched it on out came the Rev Ian McLeod and singing from Brodick Church. One of these viewers was Mr McLeod himself and it was as much a surprise for him as anyone. But a pleasant surprise and one that afforded him much fun.
