Brodick are netball champions
The third annual primary school netball tournament was held on Thursday June 8 at Arran High School.
Around 30 children from three schools participated: Brodick, Shiskine and Kilmory. Brodick were the triumphant winners with Shiskine runners up but much fun was had by all.
Here is a report of the event by P7 pupils of Brodick primary.
‘Teams from Brodick, Shiskine and Kilmory primary schools met at Arran High School for this year’s island tournament organised my Mrs Cathy Davidson of Shiskine Primary School and very kindly umpired by Mrs Margaret Roxburgh.
All the teams looked ready for the challenge and everybody worked hard to support their team mates making for an exciting and action packed tournament.
Our Brodick team worked well together, passing and calling for the ball allowing the game to flow well. Each team played each other before the final – Shiskine versus Brodick. In the first half Shiskine showed true grit, coming on to the court with all guns blazing and securing two excellent goals.
At half time Brodick had a team talk and changed our strategy, adapting our game plan. When the second half whistle blew our goal defender, Sophie Clark, stuck to her opponent with such determination, preventing her from entering the scoring circle and thwarting Shiskine’s chances of scoring any more goals. Sophie kept playing, showing true heroics, despite having sustained a minor injury for which she required an icepack – a mark of her resilience.
Our centre striker, Gordon MacIntyre, too sustained a minor injury but kept on playing, scoring and assisting many fabulous goals. The combination of Gordon and Aidan Hewie up front proved to be unstoppable resulting in a final score line of 14-2, marking a victory for Brodick.
Our midfield player: Isla McKelvie, Gavin Bodie, Fraser McKinnon, Grant Coyne and Megan McCartney marked their opponents with such gusto they dominated the play in the centre, feeding balls to the attackers.
Our Goal Keeper, John Logan, was the rock of the team, proving to be a strong and impenetrable force, pushing the attackers back out of the attacking circle. Brodick’s might came from their ability to work together as a team. They showed great resilience and stamina.
Everybody enjoyed the event and the opportunity to play and all players showed good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.’
