Neil beats strong field to take 34th Lamlash Open
The 34th Lamlash Open attracted more than 155 applications, exceeding the club maximum of 150. However, due to personal circumstances, injuries and cancellations, it ended with an entry of 147 last weekend.
Saturday began with a changeable breeze in cool conditions, which improved as the day progressed right into the evening, and at least it remained dry. One of the early starters, Neil Young, had an inspired round carding a scratch 64 – par for the course. The evening was rounded off by Tom’s Disco into the wee hours.
Sunday was a different matter with only 106 going through the computer, but more than 140 began play with many who were caught out in the worst conditions having headed home without registering their soaked cards.
The early starters had the best of the day as by 10.30am a Scotch mist began to form, which rapidly descended into heavy rain, which became a downpour by mid-afternoon. By 1.30pm players began to walk in, soaked and reported that the seventh was completely waterlogged, making play impossible.
Debate ranged from cancellation to postponement, with players adamant that play should continue after a one-hour postponement. A further inspection of the course led to a continuation of play by 2.15pm, which was met with a resounding cheer by the players. Credit to the greens staff and the course that the seventh went from a one-inch deep pool to being playable within 90 minutes.
Despite the weather conditions, the evening’s presentation was held in front of a packed clubhouse, with around 100 people in the audience. On completion of the ceremony, the floor was cleared and Tom began with his disco dancing, nearly sharing Neil’s superb performance in the open.
The club thanked everyone who took part and especially the main sponsor, the Lamlash Bay Hotel, and the sponsors of the 18 holes on each day of the open.
