Tuesday August 8, Brodick Ladies’ Open. After endless days of heavy rain, the Brodick Ladies’ Open was held on one of the few summer days experienced this year. A total of 88 ladies played in the Stableford competition. There was little run on the ball, so the CSS was 69, 34 Stableford points. However, three ladies scored 37 points so the trophy was won on a better inward half. Well done Susan Butchard of Brodick, whose handicap has now gone to nine.

A raffle was held with the money going to the Brodick Improvements Committee for upkeep of the toilets. A total of £555 was raised with thanks to Arran Active, Arran Dairies, Arran Cheese, Arran Pharmacy, Alexanders, Auchrannie, Arran Aromatics, Book and Card Shop, Brodick Bar, Belle’s Boutique, Bunty’s, The Old Byre, Chocolates by James, Castle Bay Jewellery, the Co-op, Douglas Hotel, Fiddlers, Inspirations, Jolly Molly, Little Rock, McAllister Opticians, Red Door, Taste of Arran and Wooleys for their generous donations.

Also a big thank you to the members who donated prizes and who helped out on the day. His father, David Tod, won the Shiskine Golf Club championship in May. Stanley won both the Donald McGillivray Shield for best qualifying score, and the Alexander Trophy for the club championship. Both Stanley and Rory played some magnificent long straight shots in the match that was played in a great spirit of competition. Very well done and thanks to Rion Culpan for refereeing.

Whiting Bay Golf Club

Wednesday August 8, the McNicol Cup. On a fine day for golf, 25 played in the McNicol Cup, one of the club’s oldest and most revered trophies. Course conditions were good but the speed and borrows on the greens left many floundering and CSS went out to 65. Conditions didn’t seem to trouble the top two however as Dave Hackett and Danny Head both carded re- markable net 59s to forge a fivestroke gap at the top of the leaderboard with Dave just edging the cup on a countback. 1 Dave Hackett 15, 59, ACB, 2 Danny Head 4, 59 and lowest gross, 3 Nicol Auld 4, 64, 4 John Pennycott 13, 66. Magic twos, Douglas Graham, Dave Hackett and Danny Head, all at the 4th and from Wolfi Kroner at the 17th.

Sunday August 13, The Aitken Rosebowl. Four teams played in this year’s Aitken on a beautiful morning for golf. The relaxed and sociable format of foursomes golf made for some entertaining if not brilliant play and scoring was steady rather than spectacular with John Pennycott and Dougie Auld prevailing on net 63.5. 1 John Pennycott and Douglas Auld 17.5, 63.5, 2 John Dick and Stan Rainey 12, 66, 3 Danny Head and Graeme Crichton 8.5, 68.5. Danny and Graeme bagged the only magic two of the day at the 17th. Fixtures: Sunday August 20, Kilbride Challenge v Lamlash at Whiting Bay, 10.30am for 11am tee off. Wednesday August 23, Summer Trophy.

Corrie Golf Club

Wednesday August 9, Wednesday Cup. 1 R McLean 73-15=58, 2 A Napier 66-6=60 and scratch. Another good score from Robert McLean who is getting ever closer to a single-figure handicap. Lots of magic twos with John McGovern’s effort taking home the money. Saturday August 12, Summer Cup. 1 E McKinnon 55-1=54, 2 R Logan 676=61, 3 G Andrew 72-9=63. Very nearly a memorable day at Corrie with Ewan standing on the 18th tee requiring a three for a new course record. Regretfully, he pulled his drive a little with the ball just missing this scribe by a couple of feet and settling under the hedge on the second tee resulting in a five. Nevertheless a fantastic round of golf considering the windy conditions.
