Final fling for festival

-

The McLellan Arts Festival has been going for a week now, and a great week it has been, but it is not too late to get along and enjoy the last weekend.

Tonight (Friday) is the ever popular opera gala in the community theatre in Lamlash at 7.30pm when the talented young opera singers from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, attending the Arran summer school, will transport you in an extravaganza of some of the best music and song from opera and the shows.

Last Sunday some of the singers performed at the annual festival service in Corrie Church under the direction of Alec Crowe. During the service, conducted by the Rev Angus Adamson, there were also readings from the work of Robert McLellan by John Sillars and Ailsa McNicol.

Tomorrow (Saturday), more talented young theatre students in their final year at the Royal Scottish Conservatoire will perform in Corrie Hall at 8pm – a promise of exciting drama from the next generation of Scottish actors.

Then on Sunday evening, at 7.30pm, the beautiful Beethoven Mass in C will be performed by the Royal Northern College of Music students and the McLellan Festival Chorus in the community theatre, Lamlash.

Principal study tutor Peter Wilson said: ‘We are delighted that the summer school is taking place again on the island. We have some new faces and exciting new voices. The programme for the gala is a balance of great romantic opera and some lovely songs from the shows. On Sunday, the first part of the oratorio concert will consist of solo songs followed by the Beethoven Mass in C. We are still desperately seeking a sponsor as this year has been a challenge.’

Tickets are available at the Book and Card Centre in Brodick, online at arranevents.com or at the door.
