Blooming Brian takes top spot
The annual Brodick Golf Club sunflower competition enjoyed another fantastic turnout with more than 30 entrants taking part in the fun event.
With prizes of whisky and a special award, the entries were judged in two categories, best in show and the tallest in show, and a booby prize – the worst in show which received a box of growth formula as a prize.
Chief measurer and organiser Nicol Hume measured the specimens on display and confirmed that the top three contenders were all very close, with the first prize winner measuring a tall 9ft 61/2in, followed by the second place contender at 9ft 61/4in while the third tallest measured exactly 9ft 6in.
Champion gardener Charles Hendry officiating at the event said: ‘Weather wise it has been a difficult year so I admire everyone who has put in the effort to be able to present a plant today.’
Mr Hume awarded Brian Smith with the trophy and prize for the best in show while Alan Hart was delighted with his tallest in show award which he described as a proud moment.
Equally proud, but on the opposite end of the spectrum, was Kirsty Galbraith who won the booby prize. Her amusing entry was a withered stalk in a cardboard box with a postcard from the United States which read: ‘Dear Sunflower. Gone on holiday. Food in the shed, water in the tap, fend for yourself. Good luck! Love from Kirsty and Fred Galbraith.’
