Lamlash Church has joined an initiative known as Co-op Food Share in an effort to provide fresh food for those needing a helping hand and to reduce food waste.

The new national food redistribution programme enables Co-op stores to donate good quality food marked ‘best before’ – but which is still entirely fresh – directly to local approved partners.

As an approved partner, Lamlash Church will collect the food and make it available from the vestry at the back of the church – not the church hall – between 10.30am and 2pm on weekdays. This food can then be taken away free of charge and will ensure that individuals and families on low incomes can supplement their diet with fruit and vegetables.

Ian Watt, session clerk of Lamlash Church, said: ‘We must make it clear that this food would otherwise be thrown out, and also make it clear that this project offers fresh fruit and vegetables and is in addition to the valuable work done by the Arran Foodbank.’

This community initiative between Lamlash Church and the Co-op will begin on Monday November 19 and anyone who requires a helping hand is encouraged to make use of it.
